Proxies are used by many different people for many different reasons. Some use them to surf anonymously and others use them to unblock websites in schools or at work, or those blocked by some governments even. If you use a free proxy then it makes it appear as if you're somewhere else, usually at the proxy server's location, this hides your real whereabouts. It also means that the firewalls and filters used to block popular websites only see the proxy site as well, this can bypass the filters and allow blocked sites to be viewed. The proxy acts as a gateway or tunnel, they fetch the requested sites contents and displays it in a frame on the proxy site. They have to change some of the page code so all the pictures and links work, but this can have an impact on performance, some sites don't work so well through a proxy. Whatever you use a free proxy for just remember to be careful, you shouldn't use them for anything personal like shopping or banking as they're not on a secure connection usually, so don't enter any personal or financial details on them, or anything that involves username/password login details. Don't use them for doing anything illegal either, they make you anonymous but you can still be traced if the authorities want it bad enough, you're anonymous not invisible, it makes you safer not immune.
